Deb Strain
Deb and her husband Scott currently live in their hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Scott had a vendor booth set up with Deb’s fabrics on display for us to purchase. Deb has had a life-long passion for art that led her to teaching art classes long before she became a designer. Since 1996, she has designed over 100 collections for Moda Fabrics and feels honored to have watched Moda’s growth and success over the years. “Moda’s integrity and genuine caring about quilters, the quilting history and their designers has always been a part of why I love working with this wonderful company. That and the ‘best in the business’ members of the Moda family have made it an incredible journey.”
Comments from Missouri Star Quilt Company: Deb Strain is a prolific designer for Moda Fabrics. Since 1996 she has created four or five fabric collections most years–well over 100 in total. Deb often designs fabrics celebrating America, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.

Mark your calendars: Deb Strain is coming to Quilt Town! We’re kicking off Christmas in July with a visit from this talented Moda designer in Hamilton, MO July 16-17. Hear Deb talk about how her design ideas start with a painting & the process of how they become fabric and then join her as she does some painting demos of her newest holiday collection, Woodland Winter!

Just a few notes for those of you who could not attend Monday nights meeting.
Deb was an Art Teacher for 9 years. She started designing greeting cards and her career as a fabric designer took off from there when Moda asked her to design fabric. She showed us examples of what goes into designing a fabric line and the time it takes. She hand draws and hand paints all her designs, no computer. Woodland Winter will be coming out soon for 2024-2025. Basically she made a rough sketch of the panel for the fabric, then she did lots of studies on woodland animals both for the center of the panel and for the blocks surrounding the panel. Deb also has to design and paint all the coordinating fabric. She paints everyday even while traveling as it takes a huge amount of time to get everything exactly as she wants it. She can have a maximum of 17 colors as that is how many screens there are in Korea or Japan where her fabric is printed. She has to paint each sample 3 different color ways. She is paid on a royalty of what sells. Deb then gave us a very quick look at her panels made into quilts over the years. Her husband Scott enjoys helping her and picking up the pieces when deadlines are near.
